This summer a dad from Stroud will undertake a dangerous motorcycle journey through the high passes of the Himalayas to raise money for charity.

Steve Smith, 50, will tackle the highest drivable road in the world, the Khardung La pass, which is a staggering 5,359 metres high.

He will fundraise for The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) and The Cotswold Down’s Syndrome Group, as his son has the condition.

“Our team went to India for a similar challenge in 2016, but most of them have not been mad enough to return,” said Steve.

“Parts of the road are only open from the start of June through to September, due to extreme conditions for the remainder of the year, with altitudes over 4000 metres.”

Steve will return to India on his trusty Royal Enfield Bullet in July, he will take on the Manali to Leh Highway before he heads further North to tackle Khardung La.

The condition of the surfaces will depend on the severity of the winter, and the level of flooding which is likely to diminish the quality of the highway.

“There’s no going back now, plans are well underway for this year’s challenge and the flights are now sorted,” added Steve.

The Indian adventure will cover the 474km highway over three days.
