A Thornbury nurse left a message criticising Southmead Hospital just days before she died.

Julie O’Connor recorded the video from her bed at St Peter’s Hospice along with her husband Kevin.

It was posted to Kevin’s Facebook page on February 1, just before Julie passed away from cervical cancer on February 4.

The couple hold North Bristol NHS Trust fully responsible for her death, after her condition was missed several times.

Julie had a cervical smear test in September 2014 that came back negative. She was only diagnosed when they went private in 2017.

In the video she said: “I think it’s disgusting my life should have been suffering in the way it has and will continue to suffer.”

North Bristol NHS Trust are conducting a review into Julie’s death but Kevin is campaigning for a wider review into cervical screening to ensure ‘this doesn’t happen to anyone else’.

North Bristol NHS Trust Medical Director Dr Chris Burton said:

“We are extremely sorry to hear that Mrs O’Connor has died; we have her family in our thoughts at this very difficult time and we send our deepest condolences.

“We are committed to understanding the full circumstances of the care we provided so we can improve our services for the future, and we will be publically open with the overall findings of the independent investigation we have commissioned.

“I have met with Mr O’Connor and will remain in contact with him.”
