The centre of Severn Beach is to be made a 20mph zone as part of proposed changes to walking and cycling routes in the area.

Highways England are currently developing a new motorway junction on the M49 in the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area (ASEA).

In support of the junction, designs are being tabled to upgrade cycling and walking infrastructure. This includes improvements to National Cycleway Network (NCN) route 4 between Cribbs Causeway and Severn Beach.

The proposed 20mph zone stretches from Ableton Lane to Green Lane and includes traffic calming measures and a zebra crossing on Ableton Lane near Severn Beach primary school. Station Road, Church Road, Beach Road and Beach Avenue would also see a 10mph reduction in the speed limit.

A document produced by South Gloucestershire Council states: "Lower speeds result in an environment where people feel more comfortable to walk and cycle and this generally results in increased levels of walking and cycling."

New crossings could also be put in place along Govier Way, with Bow Street Lane and Farm Lane also set for changes.

A feasibility study and outline design for the scheme has been produced on behalf of Highways England, which South Gloucestershire Council is taking forward to construction.

A public consultation is running until March 29 and the plans will be on view at two drop-in sessions this month.

These are taking place at Severn Beach and Pilning village halls, from 3-6pm on February 25 and 27 respectively.
