A DOCUMENTARY filmed by a 16-year-old that tells the story of his little brother with diabetes - and their trip of a lifetime to India - has aired on CBBC.
For the past year Downfield Sixth Form student Billy Arthur has been on a filmmaking journey for an episode of ‘My Life’ in which he tells the story of Alfie, his younger brother who has type-one diabetes.
Billy, with camera in hand, shows the way his family’s life was turned upside down by Alfie’s diagnosis - and how a trip to India helped Alfie, a Marling student, open up about the disease.
Billy explained: “We flew out to India in October for three weeks to visit a clinic that was offering free diabetes treatment to children who couldn’t afford it.
“It was just the most mindblowing experience. The biggest takeaway from me was that this clinic was so full of love and joy despite the hardship the children had to endure.”
In the documentary Billy and Alfie learn about the work done at Jnana Sanjeevini Diabetes Hospital in Bangalore, witnessing first-hand how this hospital supports thousands of children who can not afford the medical supplies they need.
The brothers also meet a forward thinking tech company who are creating more affordable test strips woven from silk, which is also better for the environment than plastic strips.
‘My Life: Blood Sugar Brothers’ aired on Monday - see it on iPlayer here: bbc.in/2Sekl3D.
