A resident and councillor has expressed his ‘concern’ over a road that has been described as an accident blackspot in Yate.

Councillor John Gawn is chair of the planning and transportation committee at Yate Town Council and has had his say on the ‘nightmare’ Station Road.

“Like many other residents I am really worried about the level of accidents on Station Road,” Cllr Gawn said.

“It is getting worse and South Glos (council) are not doing anything about it.

“At the moment they are having small accidents, if there is a fatality, and I really hope their isn’t, what will they say then?”

There was another big crash on the road last week, this follows on from a number of serious incidents on the stretch of the road between B&Q and the train station.

In early September, three vehicles were involved in a serious crash at the Cranleigh Court junction on the road, with one person taken to Southmead Hospital with serious injuries.

Later that same month a woman was cut from her car after a head on collision near to B&Q, two people were taken to hospital on that occasion.

Shockingly, in October a motorcyclist was left unconscious in a hit and run incident on the road and in December a pedestrian on a mobility scooter was knocked over.

“It is one of the main link roads in and out of Yate so obviously there is a lot of traffic,” Cllr Gawn continued.

“My feeling is that the flow of traffic needs to be looked at, maybe the lights need to be greener for longer all the way down the road.

“It may not be the answer, but we have to try something because it can’t keep happening.

“These traffic lights are ensuring that Yate is standing still, we want people to come here because the town is growing and flourishing but we need the infrastructure to support it.”

Another thing that Cllr Gawn believes could help the traffic issues on the road is the instalment of a park and ride.

This would allow residents to use bus services in to Yate rather than driving themselves.

“Another thing that would be great is a park and ride,” he said.

“It would help to calm a lot of the traffic issues in the area and take some cars off the roads.

“This would mean that we can support more people coming to the area and the shopping centre.

“We want to welcome people but we also want people to be able to move.

A statement from Yate Town Council said: “Yate Town Council has been deeply concerned about the Station Road for some time.

“The Town council, as long ago as 2015, did a complete analysis of accident data and identified a list of places that required urgent action.

“We lobbied the highways authority about this and we have continued to chase them for action.

“Sadly, they have not done anything to address any of the issues identified in that report.

“The problem on Station Road has continued to get worse since we drew up that list.

“South Gloucestershire Council have closed their eyes to this and it is about time they opened them before any major accidents happen.”

South Gloucestershire Councillor for Yate Central Sue Walker echoed Cllr Gawn’s thoughts on the issues with the road.

“There are some big problems with it and I think we need to take another look at the whole signalling system,” she said.

“We need to make sure that the lights are working efficiently and safely for everyone.

“There have been some changes to the road which have helped, but more can be done.”

Cllr Colin Hunt, cabinet member for planning, transport and strategic environment said he was disappointed by what he believed was a political attack by the Lib Dem run council.

South Gloucestershire Council revealed that they have made numerous changes on the road since 2017, including: Improved pedestrian signing, improved signing and lining as well as planned implementation of puffin crossings on nearby roads.
