The family and friends of a Charfield man have come together to ensure he has a lasting legacy.

Jack Jones was killed in a car crash on Wotton Road in January 2018. He was 22-years-old.

He had been a rear seat passenger in a Ford Fiesta, driven by his friend Daniel Kingston-Drewitt which crashed into a VW Golf.

Kingston-Drewitt was found to be over the legal alcohol limit and to have traces of cannabis in his blood.

He was last month given a three year prison sentence for causing death by dangerous driving and causing injury to another passenger, Cameron Williams

In the wake of his death, Jack’s friends responded by raising money.

Adam Spiers, one of Jack’s oldest friends, set up a JustGiving page to raise money to fund a defibrillator at the village hall.

He also wanted to cover funeral expenses for Jack and to help one of the other people injured in the car accident.

Adam also contacted Katherine Lady Berkeley's (KLB) school, which Jack used to attend, and arranged a non-uniform day to raise extra funds.

Jack and Adam were both active members of Charfield Football Club.

Adam worked with Danny Tomlin of Westgate Promotions to play a local derby match against Wotton Rovers in Jack’s memory.

More than 200 people turned out to watch.

All together through the Just Giving Page, the football match and donations from KLB, Adam raised over £9200.

Working with the Parish Council and South West Ambulance Service, he, along with Jack's mother Lea Watson, have now had the defibrillator installed at the Memorial Hall in Charfield.

A plaque with Jack's name on it has been fixed to the wall next to it.

The defibrillator is a rented unit, which is serviced by South West Ambulance. Some of the money has been kept aside to fund a replacement defibrillator when the current one has run its service.

Local handyman Daren Holmes fitted the unit free of charge.

"We are very grateful for his time in doing this for our community," said Lea.

"As a family we didn’t need the to use any of the funds raised so remaining money will be used to buy a bench which we are hoping to place in the playing field next to the memorial hall where Jack spent many happy years playing football.

"I am so grateful to Adam and the rest of Jack’s friends for putting their energy in to doing this during such a terrible time. I am still overwhelmed by the amount money given and I would like to say a massive thank you to all of those that donated.

"Thanks to Adam, Jack will have a lasting legacy that will save lives and that makes me very proud," she added.
