STROUD News and Journal editor John Wilson has handed over £1,000 to Stroud Sea Cadets.

The money was provided by the Gannett Foundation, the charitable fund run by Newsquest Media Group, the publisher of the SNJ, which has given nearly £300,000 to 50 good causes around the UK this year.

The sea cadets will use the money to build a retaining wall at their base in Frome Hall Lane, off Bath Road.

As well as stabilising the area, it will allow the storage of boats and vehicles, and pave the way for a future extension of their building.

Phil Butcher, chairman of Stroud Sea Cadets, said he was delighted to receive the donation, which will make a big impact on the organisation.
