A young Thornbury side took on a powerful St Ives team and cruised past them 49-20. This was a 'must win' match for Thornbury.

The Thorns had been slipping close to the relegation zone after recent results.

The opening exchanges were fairly even, however, after only six minutes Sam Poustie went off injured.

That did not stop Thornbury's rhythm as Dan Hussey scored the first try of the match, Jake Wood then stepped up and added the conversion.

Three minutes later Harry Glew scored a fine try with tremendous tackling and support by the whole team and once again Wood added the extras to make it 14-0 to Thorns.

St Ives hit back on the 15 minute mark with a long range penalty to get themselves on the scoreboard.

Another fine try by the Thorns stretched the lead, as Glew scored a brilliant effort to make it 19-3 at half time.

Within three minutes of the second half restarting, Thorns had a penalty and Wood slotted the kick from 30 metres 22-3.

In the 50th minute the Try Bonus Point was in the bag when following a loose kick by St Ives, Alfie Richardson linked up with the three-quarters to allow Rich Bennett to race in from 25 metres for possibly the try of the match.

St Ives rallied and were awarded a try then tried to up their tempo and Louis Osborne was sent to the bin.

The 14 Thorns players struck back with a Sam Evans try which was pushed over from twelve metres, Wood again converted.

Hussey returned from the sin bin after the Hake's had scored twice to make it 34-20.

At the end of the third quarter Wood struck a fine long range penalty for 37-20 and shortly afterwards he topped off a fine three-quarter movement with a try which he converted himself to stretch Thorns lead to 44-20.

As the match went into overtime Hussey finished off a fine move in the bottom corner after great work from the whole Thorns side as the game ended.

The Sponsors Man of the Match with a try, two penalties and four conversions for a personal total of 19 points was Jake Wood.

Thorns’ now go in to their next league match at Keynsham on March 23 but before that they have a Combination Cup Semi Final at Cleve on Thursday.
