A community shop in Almondsbury has celebrated its 10th birthday in style.

Almondsbury Community Shop held a week of celebrations to mark the occasion, culminating in the unveiling of a new sign at a special event on Saturday.

MP Jack Lopresti unveiled the new sign and also cut a cake in the shape of the shop made by Antony Camacho from Caked Up.

Members of the local scout group sung happy birthday and three Almondsbury pupils, Noah, Katie and Mia, were given prizes for writing poems about the shop.

Celebrations continued into the evening with a variety night at the Old School Hall. This included music from Robin Reece, Almondsbury Voices ladies choir and The Severn Whalers shanty band.

Awards were also given to Tony Gibson and Angela Hammond, the shop's founders.

Earlier in the week there had even been performances of Right Moves, a play about the shop from BBC script producer and Almondsbury resident Loretta Preece.

The shop opened in March 2009 to help people, particularly the elderly and disabled, shop locally. The village's last shop had closed in 2002.

It is entirely run by volunteers, with any profits being reinvested in the shop or donated to charities or activities in the local community.

There is an emphasis on local produce, with fresh bread and cakes delivered daily from Crusty Loaf Bakery in Olveston.

In 2018 residents raised £400,000 to buy the shop premises on Church Road, helping to secure its long-term future.

John McLevy, chairman of the Almondsbury Community Services Association, describes the shop as "A true community venture at the centre of village life."

The shop is open from 8.30am-6pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am-2.30pm on Saturdays.
