A recent stop and check operation on commercial vehicles in Yate found that 34% were not roadworthy.

The operation, that was carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, police and South Gloucestershire Council's StreetCare team stopped 83 vehicles on the roads late last month.

Officials were stopping motorists next to Yate Fire Station.

Amongst the vehicles stopped on the day were 67 commercial vans and 14 taxis.

Two cars were also stopped after the drivers were seen not wearing seatbelts.

The StreetCare posted on their official Facebook page, detailing that of the 67 commercial vehicles stopped, 23 of them were not legal to be on the roads.

Many had several major faults including worn out tyres, brake or indicator lights not working and also no insurance.

Numerous warnings were issued and several drivers were issued with fixed penalty notices.

Two vehicles that were stopped were actually kept to be towed away.

One taxi driver also had their licence suspended during the operation.
