One of Britain's most loved film stars was spotted in Thornbury at the weekend.

BAFTA award-winning actor Bill Nighy went out for dinner at Ronnie's in Thornbury on Saturday night.

The Love Actually star was dining with an American actress.

Owner and chef Ron Faulkner said: "They obviously wanted a very private night out so we gave them a a corner upstairs out the way.

"They kept themselves to themselves, they were on a personal night out."

Nighy, who has also appeared in the likes of Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and Hot Fuzz, was recognised by a number of customers despite sitting with his back to the restaurant.

It appeared he enjoyed his trip to Thornbury.

"He put his head through the door and said thank you for the lovely meal," said Ron.

Ron is well used to having celebrities in his restaurant, with David Attenborough having dined there in the past and Bristol-born comedian Russell Howard a regular visitor over the years, but admitted to being 'a little starstruck'.

"He's probably one of the biggest names. He's quite special isn't he?" Ron added.

It is believed Nighy is currently filming in the Cotswolds.

He is set to play Mr Woodhouse in the upcoming film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.

Parts of the 1996 adaptation of Emma were filmed in Gloucestershire.

Ronnie's has won numerous awards in the 12 years it has been in the town. If you fancy dining like a film star, the restaurant is open Wednesday-Saturday.
