Labour MEP Clare Moody was in Stroud this afternoon ahead of next week's European elections.

Clare, who was elected as an MEP in 2014, is top of Labour's list of candidates for the south west and Gibraltar region.

She met residents on Stroud High Street from 12.30-2pm before going onto canvass electors elsewhere in the town.

Speaking about the town Clare said: "Stroud is an important place in the south west. It has it's own distinctive character. We have David (Drew, MP) here who is wonderful. It's lovely to be back."

On why voters should back Labour she said the country was only still in the EU because of them.

"This is about who can deliver. We have three times voted against Brexit. We have voted twice for a referendum. This is about who will represent Stroud and the south west. I have five years experience," she added.

Speaking about her support for a People's Vote the former trade unionist said: "The promises of what Leave would look like ranged from a Norway option to the easiest trade deal in history. None of what was said by leave campaigners has proved to be reality. "It's giving a voice back to the people."

Clare also spoke about the news Swindon's Honda plant would be closing in 2021.

"Honda is just one of many job losses announced. It's a major one in our area.

"The Japanese ambassador has been very clear about the negative impact on the economy as a cause of Brexit. All of this is happening before we have even left," she said.

The European elections are taking place on Thursday, May 23.
