Plans to serve alcohol from 10am at a surfing pool being built in Easter Compton have been withdrawn after complaints from residents.

The Wave, an inland surfing lake set to open later in the year, applied for a license to serve alcohol from 10am-midnight every day and to host live music events and other entertainment.

They have now withdrawn the application after complaints.

Anne Dixon, who lives on Pilning Street on nearby Awkley, said: “The flatness of the terrain surrounding this development means noise will travel great distances disturbing the population, farm animals and wildlife.

“Alcohol sales for such extended periods will lead to possible behaviour issues.”

Craig Stoddart, CEO of The Wave, said: “We have to apply for a license in order to be able to serve refreshments and alcohol, play music and host surf-focused events, such as a surf competition, in the future.

“However, we want to reassure people that we have absolutely no intention of being an alcohol-fuelled venue or running events every week. We want a café culture on site, where people can enjoy a drink after their surf - not an alcohol-led culture focused on irresponsible drinking.

“The vast majority of visitors will only be on site in the daytime when they are able to surf.

“We have spoken to a number of residents to give them context and reassure them of our intentions. We also held a public meeting where local people aired their concerns.

“We have taken all this feedback on board and as a response we have pulled the application as it stands. We are currently reviewing it to take into account the comments from the local community.”
