THIEVES broke into a cash machine in York and stole money early this morning - the second ATM to be attacked and damaged in the city within 48 hours.

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for information after the theft from a cash machine next to Today's Express on Haxby Road, a short distance from Haxby Road Primary Academy.

The force said officers were called to Vyner Street off Haxby Road at 4.20am.

Following the incident, a cordon was put in place around the shop. There was one police van at the scene this morning.

A spokesperson for the force added: "Detectives believe the thieves forced their way into the machine. It is not yet known how much money was taken.

"Crime scene investigators attended and extensive inquiries are currently taking place to catch the culprits."

It comes after raiders targeted a cash machine at the Select Convenience store and Post Office on North Moor Lane in Huntington early Thursday morning.

North Yorkshire Police said that the front door of the shop was smashed, and an ATM inside was damaged and smoking.

Inquires into that incident are ongoing.

No arrests have been made in connection with either incident.

For the Haxby Road incident, North Yorkshire Police is urging anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously in the area at the time or has any other information that could help the investigation to call 101, select option 2 and ask for York CID.

Alternatively, phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
