The road layout of one of Yate’s busiest roundabouts will now be altered after work was given a date to finally go ahead.

The current layout of the roundabout by Morrisons in Yate has been questioned by residents for a number of years, now though it may be improved.

South Gloucestershire Council confirmed that the project will be funded from a number of sources, including S106 funding from the Tesco development, the Sea Stores site and also Yate Cinema.

From Monday, June 17, work will begin on a scheme to introduce several improvements in and around the roundabout.

There will be a new crossing built on Westerleigh Road and Kennedy Way, while the pathway on the nearby Home Orchard will be widened.

There will also be improvements made to the signage and road markings.

Measures will be implemented to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum during the work, this will include temporary two-way traffic lights.

Yate Town and South Glos Cllr John Gawn said: “I am delighted that at last it is being used to do something we have long wanted.

“Drivers and pedestrians hate the B&Q roundabout, it is confusing and dangerous and these works will make it safe.”

Cllr Steve Reade, Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and Strategic Environment said: “As a council we are committed to ensuring that money gained from local developments go right back into our local communities such as the scheme we are delivering on Westerleigh Road.

“That means where residents see growth they will see this matched with improvements.”

The work is expected to be completed before the end of August, with much of the work through the summer holidays.
