It was full steam ahead as steam boats descended on Lechlade from across the country.

Lechlade residents and visitors were treated to an afternoon of steam when 12 steam boats, an electric vessel and a vintage diesel boat descended on the towns’ pub – The Riverside Inn.

Steam Boat Sunday, as it is being dubbed, was organised by David Howard of the Consuta Trust as a part of a Heritage lottery fund grant and David Avery of The Steam Boat Association.

A series of river competitions were put on for the public on Sunday, June 2.

The Lechlade part of the trip is part of this year’s Steam Boat Association of Great Britain Thames Rally.

“It gives the public a chance to see steam boats in action on the Thames, it is also a chance for us to showcase what we do to new and potential members of our steam association,” said member and organiser - David Avery.

“The rain came in but did not dampen our spirits, big thanks to The Riverside Inn’s managers Will and Ayesha as well as Ian from Lechlade Marina (Ltd)."

Julie Moss of Arkell’s Brewery said: “Will and Ayesha are trying to bring something different to The Riverside and over the last couple of months we have seen live music, a history weekend and now steamboats.

"The pizza shack is now up and running in the garden so it is an excellent time to come and discover The Riverside Inn or to come back for another visit.”
