THIS weekend, communities across Britain are holding events to honour MP Jo Cox.

The Great Get Together will mark the third anniversary of her murder and was the idea of Jo’s husband Brendan along with her friends and family.

Cam is planning to bring people from the local community together to show, in the words of Jo that we have ‘more in common than that which divides us’.

A free shared lunch event will be held on Sunday (June 23) at Cam Youth and Community Centre in Frederick Thomas Road from 12pm until 3pm.

There will be a free ‘Strictly Fitness’ session from qualified instructor Jon Rodriquez and a bouncy castle.

This is the third Great Get Together event in the area, following successful days at the Chantry Centre in Dursley and Cam Cricket Club in the previous two years.

Danae Savvidou, on behalf of the organisers, said: “There’s so much talk at the moment about all the things that divide us so this will be a fantastic chance for us to get together for a really good day out when we can focus instead on all the things we have in common.

“There will be food and music for people to enjoy and it will be an opportunity to get to know your neighbours better and meet up with others in the community that you might not know.”

The event is part of The Great Get Together, held annually to remember Jo Cox MP who was murdered in 2016 and to encourage the stronger, more inclusive communities that she believed in.

Kim Leadbeater, Jo’s sister, said: “I’m really touched by the amazing efforts so many people around the country are putting in towards keeping Jo’s values and her spirit alive.

"Events like this can make a really big difference in strengthening our communities and reminding everybody that while we may disagree about a lot of things, there’s an awful lot more that we have in common.

"It’s those ties that bind us together and make us all stronger.”
