SHOPPERS in Dursley got introduced to a mini hovercraft used in rescues along the Severn.
Sharpness' lifeboat crew stationed the vessel in Silver Street this morning, as part of a fundraising campaign.
Will Thorogood, a volunteer crew member, said: “All our funding comes from donations so we really do need the public’s support.”
Two-year-old Bill Purton, pictured here, got in the craft's driving seat and tried on one of the crew's helmets.
The mini hovercraft is used when low tides do not allow other craft to be launched.
"It can travel at speed over water, sand, mud, grass and other surfaces," said Will.
"Typically it will be deployed with one person as 'pilot' plus one crew member."
SARA operates an independent inshore lifeboat search and rescue service along 40 miles of the Bristol Channel and River Severn from the M4 bridges to Gloucester - one of the most challenging waterways in the world.
The operational area has severe tidal conditions, with fast-flowing water, dangerous sand, mud-banks and the famous Severn Bore.
The crew also provides a flood-rescue service and, when called upon, responds to flood emergencies across the UK.
