Stroud & District Athletics Club triathlon duo Gwen Kinsey and Elizabeth Williams tasted success at the European Standard Distance Championships in the Netherlands, writes Lewis Saunders.

Kinsey was crowned European champion in the 45-49 age category.

The Stroud athlete was on top form, finishing first in the run, second on the bike and third in swim as she competed for the first time at a major championships over the standard distance.

Meanwhile, Williams, competing for the second successive year at the championships, showed real strength of character, progressing through the field well after finding herself with a deficit to make up after the swim to finish 26th in the 40-44 age category, and 14th GB athlete.

Spokesman Lewis Saunders said: "SADAC Tri Team are in the planning stages of creating a junior triathlon section and are hoping many local children will want to take up this exciting sport and follow in the footsteps of Gwen and Elizabeth."
