Children at Hawkesbury Primary School have taken part in an electric car race.

A team of 7 pupils took part in the race on June 22.

Fourteen teams took part in the event at Renishaw’s Miskin base near Cardiff.

Pupils spent the last two months building the Greenpower Goblin one-seater vehicle in an after-school club ran by teacher Dale Williams. They bolted, screwed and painted the kit car – paid for thanks to sponsorship from local organisations.

One of the parents who helped organise the club and the purchase of the car, Helena Sadler – whose son is one of the team members – said: “It was wonderful to see the kids working so well together as a team, we were so proud of all of the effort they have put in.”

At the event the children took turns in drag and slalom races and the event concluded with a knock-out two-lap sprint race.

There were also prizes for other things such as the best presented team and the best car bodywork.

The Hawkesbury team came home with an award for the ‘Greenest Bodywork’ having constructed it from the cardboard box that the kit had arrived in.

The design was created by one of the team members. His scheme incorporated the same colours as the logo designed by two other members of the team.

All team members helped to paint the bodywork and get it all attached to the car in time for the race.
