More than £800 has been raised for a Thornbury woman who's house burnt down.

Alice Leaper, born and raised in the town but now living in Malawi, had her home in Nkhata Bay burnt to the ground earlier this year.

Along with her friend Josie Redmonds, Alice runs Butterfly Space, a volunteer community project in Malawi.

Janet Raven, the former headteacher of Crossways School and a close friend of Alice’s mother, organised a fundraising event for Alice after learning of her plight.

The event was held at Thornbury United Reform Church on Thursday, with Janet delighted with the 'wonderful amount' of £888 raised.

"Leftover items from the table top sale are going to Alice’s mother Gill Leaper who runs Butterfly Space fundraising throughout the year so there will be more money raised through that way," she added.
