There was plentiful produce at the weekend for Thornbury Horticultural Society's summer show. Held on Saturday in the Armstrong Hall, the show featured a variety of classes as vice chairman Ruth Kitson explains in her show report:

Exhibitors arrived holding tight to their produce on a wild and windy morning.

Vegetable entries were down due to the earlier summer heatwave and the same with flowers but the judges still had some quality items to judge.

In the vegetable section Mr B. Fletcher won most points beating Mrs D. Culverhouse by one point while she topped the flower and fruit classes.

In the floral art Miss Julie Sparks was again the main winner.

In this highly contested section preserves were headed by Mrs Sandra Grey and in the world food cooking classes Mrs Jenny Jones was the top winner with her Falfield Women's Institute having little competition.

Mrs Zoe Hardman narrowly beat Mrs Ann Mair in the handicrafts section and in the very large entry of photographs Mr Sheridan Rendall came out on top.

We still need more children to make entries as Victoria Burgess, in the classes up to seven years old, won two cups with no competition but in the older group Elizabeth Latham-Roberts just beat her twin sister Rebecca.

The trophies were presented by Mrs Rita Freed, our president, at the close of the show and chairman Rex Davis thanked all the hard workers who put the show together and made judges and visitors very welcome.

But he stressed that we still needed more helpers to assist the ageing committee members.
