Before Dobbies garden centre, the Jefferies family were the main purveyors of plants and seeds in Cirencester.

At one time they owned five nurseries in an around Cirencester and the shop on the corner of the Market place affectionately still known to this day as “Jefferies Corner”.

In 1979 Jefferies opened a new garden centre in the Avenue/Tower Street to great fanfair which included Lady Bathurst cutting the ribbon with a pair of garden shears.

The Town Cryer attended and there was a parade through town by the Phoenix Majorettes.

The Avenue garden centre closed not long after it had opened and the Kingsmeadow centre took it’s place in 1980.

The Avenue site is now Mineva Court and Kingsmead became Tesco's.
