The finalists for the Pride of the Cotwolds' Spirit of Youth award have been announced.

Silver Duke of Edinburgh Group from Cirencester College

Cirencester College students Oliver Cook, Guy Saxby and triplets Elena, Ollie and Charlotte Clements got more than they bargained for when hiking in the Welsh Black Mountains.

They rescued a mountain biker who had a broken collarbone and ribs.

The group carried out first aid and guided the emergency services to their location. The mountain biker was safely taken to hospital and given treatment for his injuries.

They were nominated by one of their Duke of Edinburgh leaders who said: “I am extremely proud they were able to put both their first aid and navigation skills into practice.

“As the students are only in their first year at the college - and with aspirations to continue onto the Gold award next year - we hope they can continue to inspire students past and present.

“This will set the standard for future DofE groups, as they look ahead to their own expeditions.”

Harry Radcliffe

Gazette Series:

Harry suffered a terrible loss last year when his cousin was stabbed to death in Liverpool.

Present on the night of the incident, Harry is now working to stop knife crime. He and his family have given interviews on how these crimes affect people and most recently Harry spoke in front of his whole college, Cleeve School and Sixth Form Centre, about knife crime.

The person who nominated Harry said: “Harry had a visible and genuine impact on the students in Cleeve School by talking to them about knife crime and the impact it has had on his family.

“His story was so impactful and made a real difference to all those present. He has been strong enough to work through this horrific incident and turn it into something that can be used to help others.”

Harry said: “I feel honoured to have been put forward for this award as raising awareness in whatever way possible against knife crime is something I feel very strongly about.”

The winner will be revealed at a ceremony on September 26.
