A search for person who was reportedly 'swept away' in the River Severn was called off as police believe it was a false alarm.

Emergency services were called at 11.25am on Monday morning after a member of the public reported the incident.

A search involving Gloucestershire police, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, the National Police Air Service and the Severn Area Rescue Association is currently underway in the Castlemeads area.

Incident commander PC Bobby George said the search was called off at around 2:15pm.

He said: "We received a call that there had been an object, an animal or a person seen in that stretch of water.

"We have searched the area and we are convinced that there's no person in that stretch of water at this time."

The Severn Bore had come through Gloucester earlier and there are large areas that are flooded.
