Not many restaurants or pubs have the glowing reputation of The Falcon in Wotton-under-Edge so I decided to visit to see what all the fuss was about.

With more than 25,000 likes on its Facebook page, The Falcon has quickly become one of the most talked about eateries in the area.

I attended on a beautiful Sunday evening and was greeted by the lovely warm atmosphere of the pub.

One thing that struck me on the restaurant side of the pub was how few tables there were, this works perfectly as it provides a sense of exclusivity to the visit.

When walking in to The Falcon you are greeted immediately by the friendly and happy members of staff.

On our Sunday evening visit we were served by owner of the pub Andy Starling himself, a very confident man who knows his menu and the job inside out.

He conversed with all people that came in to the restaurant for their meal on arrival and is visible throughout the evening.

My partner had a red wine and I had a diet coke; I was unfortunately the designated driver for the evening.

When discussing our meal options there was a large variety to choose from, but The Falcon is famous for its steaks and so on Andy’s recommendation we chose the £40pp set menu.

The starter came quickly and had a selection of different appetisers, including chicken wings, cheesy garlic bread, breaded brie and pan-fried chorizo.

All of these starters were absolutely beautiful, with the garlic bread in particular being a particular favourite of mine. I would even go as far as saying that it was the best I’ve ever had.

The good food didn’t stop there either, with our sharer main course also living up to the expectation.

The 32oz tomahawk steak was absolutely incredible, just like the garlic bread it has to be the best that I have ever eaten.

The meat was perfect, it was not tough and gristly it was beautifully cooked.

Andy also informed me that a lot of the food they serve is source locally, with their meat coming from a farm less than a mile away.

This was served with a delicious selection of sauces, including peppercorn, blue cheese and beef dripping sauce.

After some deliberation we decided that we would eat our dessert at the restaurant rather than taking them home, despite being rather full from the main course and starter.

The sharer dessert was a three different sweet treats, the banoffee pie had a lovely strong banana taste, the white chocolate cheesecake was also delightful and the brownie with ice cream was a lovely addition to what was a gorgeous three course meal.

I would say that there are not many dining experiences like The Falcon, it is a restaurant with a warm, friendly atmosphere and the food is up there with the best in the South West, it is expensive but you pay for quality.

The Falcon won Gazette Pub of the Year for 2019, and I will definitely be attending again to sample other items on the menu.
