Thornbury firefighters had to smash a car window to rescue a child who had accidentally been locked inside.

They were called to Tesco car park on Saturday morning, breaking the glass in a way that stopped any shards going towards the child.

The youngster was rescued within 15 minutes.

A post on the Thornbury Firefighter's Facebook page stated: "Often we can gain access with out damaging or smashing the windows. In this instance, however, it was not possible.

"We used our specialist equipment to contain the glass and remove it away from the trapped person.

"This is an excellent example of the scope of our skills and the level headed thinking of the concerned family members on scene to call 999 and not act alone.

"When we left the child was happily splashing their wellies in a puddle while cuddling one of our Trauma Teddies supplied by a local community knitting group."
