Nearly 2,000 runners have got underway in the 38th annual Stroud Half Marathon.

Runners are currently heading towards Stonehouse where they will complete a loop which takes in Standish and Whitminster before returning to the start/finish line near Marling School.

Last year the fastest runner finished in 1:08:05 so the first finishers can be expected shortly after 10am.

Athletes have travelled from as far as France to take part but local running clubs such as Stroud AC, Cirencester AC and Dursley Running Club will also be well represented. And our very own reporter Sam Krayem-Wood is running in aid of Sue Ryder. Good luck Sam! You can donate here.

Yesterday's heavy rain prompted concern the race would have to be cancelled but organisers were quick to allay fears. Sunshine is forecast for the duration of the race.

Pictures and reaction from the race will be available online later today and in next week's papers.
