Labour have announced their candidate to contest the Thornbury and Yate seat at the next general election.

Rob Logan was selected at a meeting of the local Labour Party last week.

Married with two daughters, Rob lives in Bristol and is director of procurement at the University of Bristol.

A spokesman for the Thornbury and Yate Constituency Labour Party said: "Rob has a long-standing family connection to the area, his wife grew up in the outskirts of Thornbury and his extended family is lucky enough to live here still, so he really understands our community and the issues we face here.

"An experienced member of the Labour Party, he is currently a school governor, and member of the public body which appoints and regulates magistrates and has experience of criminal justice work. He has extensive experience of supporting people in the community and of working in housing, local government and higher education.

"He spoke of the need to address the local issues that face the people of South Gloucestershire, particularly the poor funding of local schools, affordable housing and public transport. He emphasised the need for Labour to be an alternative to the failed policies of the current Conservative government and for the proper funding of public services such as the NHS, schools and social care.

"The Chairman of Yate and Thornbury CLP stated that given the likelihood of a general election in the near future, the local Labour Party were fortunate to have been able to select such an outstanding candidate with an understanding of local issues.

He will be standing against Conservative Luke Hall, who currently has a 12,000 majority and has held the seat since 2015, and Lib Dem Claire Young.

The Labour Party won 12.1 per cent of the vote at the last general election in Thornbury and Yate, up from 7.8 per cent in 2015.

MPs are due to vote later on Boris Johnson's call to have an election on December 12.
