A CELEBRATION has taken place to honour Wotton under Edge’s long serving town crier.

George Carpenter has been town crier in Wotton for 50 years and on the anniversary of his achievement he was joined by town criers from around the country in a colourful celebration.

To mark the milestone, George was presented with the Freedom of the Town by Mayor Roger Claydon, the first time this honour has ever been awarded in the town.

Throughout his 50 years in the role, George has represented Wotton at numerous events, not only locally but elsewhere in the UK and around the world.

He was also a town councillor for a time, held the office of town mayor from 1981 to 1982 and has been involved with many community organisations and projects over the years.

The celebration was attended by family and friends as well as local councillors and members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers.
