A NEW shop showcasing the work of independent crafts people and artists is opening on Berkeley High Street on Saturday.

The store, named From Home, will feature handmade pieces from artisans working in the local area.

Founders wildlife artist Lizzie Hammond and Jeanette Palmer, a maker of crafted homewares, decided to launch the venture to support craftspeople after seeing firsthand the difficulties of competing for shelf space against mass-produced products.

“We found it very hard to find shops that were willing to stock one-off items as most prefer to bulk buy, often months in advance.

“Even the shops that do stock from small craft producers require such a high commission that it is hard to make a sustainable business from it.

“With From Home we want to celebrate and support the creative talent in the area by providing an outlet that not only sells their goods but also engages the consumers by telling their stories and allowing the makers to host workshops and interactive events showcasing their skills.

“We want From Home to become a hub for artists and creators and allow homegrown talent to flourish. There is something wonderful about individual pieces of work that have been created by hand with skill and love.”

The shop, located at 1 High Street, Berkeley will be open Thursdays to Mondays from 9.30am to 5pm.
