A TEENAGER could be in line to nail down a place at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Bethany Jones, of Mountbatten Close, Yate, is only 15 but she is already one of the best hammer throwers of her age group in the UK.

The Brimsham Green student is currently ranked 14th in the UK's Hammer Throwing under-17 age group, despite being two years younger than other competitors.

She was also recently crowned 1st in the Avon District and second in the South West Championships.

Bethany said: "To be honest I haven't seriously thought about the Olympics yet as I am mainly concentrating on just improving and raising my rankings.

"But if I continue to do well I am sure it would start to cross my mind. For now though, I'm enjoying what I'm doing at the moment."

Bethany picked up the sport when she joined her sister at Yate and District Athletics Club.

She said: "I first started doing everything before turning solely to hammer throwing.

"It may be an odd sport to do as a teenage girl but I really enjoy it, it's the buzz you get from throwing the hammer far."

Bethany's mother Karen said: "We are delighted she is doing so well. Her sister is a good sprinter, so I guess it has just run in the family."
