A DURSLEY choir has honoured a founder member 60 years after she started singing.

Members of Tyndale Choral Society took time out during their final rehearsal for their performance this weekend to mark 60 years since Estelle James joined the choir.

The alto singer, who is still with the choir, joined in July 1959, as rehearsals began for their first ever concert.

She said: “Our first concert was Handel’s Messiah, and I remember that night every time we’ve performed it since.

"Over the years we’ve sung a huge variety of music. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and I’m particularly looking forward to next year, when we officially celebrate our 60th anniversary.”

Music director Ben Sawyer said: “We have a lot of loyal members and Estelle’s achievement is something special.”

This Saturday at 7.30pm marks the choir’s – and Estelle’s – 115th concert, a double bill of Mozart’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria, at St James’s Church.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from tyndale-choral-society.org.uk or on the door.
