YATE Relay For Life fundraisers all gathered at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall to officially announce the total raised from this year’s event.

Over 100 people attended the special event laid on by the organisers of the event, with the group celebrating another fantastic year of fundraising.

After a record-breaking year in 2018, the total did not quite reach the same heights, but a fantastic £74,325 was still raised.

The Relay For Life is an event that takes place in the summer and raises money for Cancer Research UK.

It involves a number of teams staying at the 400m track from 12pm on Saturday until 12pm of Sunday. At all times throughout the 24 hours there must be at least one member of each team on the track.

A number of awards were given out at the event in the Town Hall for fundraisers special achievements.

These included: Kelvin Bullock, who walked three marathons over the Relay For Life 24 hour event in July, to Young Fundraiser of the Year Award which went to air cadet Heidi Collins-Beckett.

They were presented with their awards by Sam Williams, Cancer Research UK’s regional fundraising Manager for the South West.

“This spectacular and emotional community festival has contributed an incredible amount for lifesaving research into cancer and every person involved can be enormously proud of the difference they are making,” Sam said.

“We are especially grateful for the wonderful work the organising volunteers do to bring Relay For Life to Yate each year.”

Sam gave a special award to team Silver Strollers who have raised an impressive £25,000 for the charity in just 5 years.

It was revealed on the night that one of the events longest running fundraising teams Girls Allowed had raised an incredible £75,000 for the charity since 2008.

“We have so much planned for next years event already,” Beverley Sadier committee member said.

“We are organising more fundraising events throughout the year, our first is our annual Glowalk for Stand Up To Cancer on November 16, starting from Yate Shopping Centre.”

“We are extremely proud of our local community,” Liam added.

“This year has been amazing, but next year will be better.”
