The match at Mansfield was like a battle of two rutting stags. It was an exciting seven goal battle with Rovers gaining a deserved three points, scoring four goals, two of which were from set pieces. Is a new Rovers team emerging?

It is too early to answer that question, but head coach Mark Cooper is doing exactly what he said he would. Knowing the need for attacking players he has brought in two, Brown from Colchester and March from Leamington. Patience is now a word for all of us. The football world knows where we need strengthening and clubs will be asking silly money with the transfer window now open.

Mark will need in some cases to play a waiting game and any players arriving at The New Lawn will take time to settle, as did Christian Doidge and Reece Brown.

What we can do is take a balanced view looking forward and back. Looking back the season has been enjoyably frustrating. Quality football has been played but our finishing has been wretched, resulting in us surrendering an automatic play-off place. Looking forward, this automatic spot can be regained, but not immediately. We must aim to keep there or thereabouts until Easter, then surge through to the top.

It will be a gripping final half to the season, not least because of the battle for places with our friends from Cheltenham and Swindon.

Despite my memories of that Stratton Bank soaking I still have a soft spot for the Swindon Town of my youth, as long as they finish below us! Cheltenham, splendidly managed by Michael Duff are a real threat and have a strong unity and purpose that we must aim for.

We need to display a purpose for ninety minutes and more by starting well and finishing strongly.

Whatever happens our future is exciting. Division one and a new stadium are within our grasp and are a fine verdict on Dale Vince’s ten years in charge. The club has moved forward in every respect.

There are many hopefuls when any managerial vacancy occurs. There is one piece of advice for all of them, do not choose your club, choose your Chairman!

Dale, you have done us all proud!
