A COLLECTION of tasty soup recipes has been published as a cookbook to raise money to help young people in Kenya.

The Dagoretti Soup Corner Cook Book has been written by Sonja Grimes, in support of the Dagoretti Corner Street Children Programme, a Christian charity dedicated to the prevention and alleviation of poverty and the promotion of education amongst children and young people in Nairobi.

The charity is based at Wotton Baptist Church, where monthly fundraising soup lunches are held.

Sonja has been one of the project’s soup makers for eight years.

She said: “I decided to make it a challenge to find unusual soups, so each month I trawl through magazines and the internet looking for something a little different.

“It feels a bit like travelling, finding a soup from a different country or with unusual ingredients or odd combinations.”

Sonja said one of her favourites is the samosa soup which she said tastes like ‘liquified samosas’.

“We wanted to create a book that was not just about different soups, but also tells the story of the Dagoretti Street Corner Programme, the great work it does and the incredibly positive impacts it has on the boys it supports. I believe that we have achieved that,” said Sonja.

“I hope that the book will generate extra funds to ensure the project continues and improves the facilities and highlights the work of the charity.

“If it also inspires people who have bought the book to try out some of the recipes, sharing them with others, then that would be great.

“Sharing food is a way to unite people and I know the monthly soup does this for the Wotton community."

The book, which features 50 recipes, is available via soupbook@dagoretti.co.uk or from Fish out of Water and The Ark, at £9.99 per copy.
