Tributes have been paid to an Almondsbury teacher and pianist who has died aged 95.

Jean Short spent almost 20 years teaching at Almondsbury C of E Primary school during the 1960s and 70s, either side of teaching at schools in Bristol.

After retiring she conducted the Almondsbury WI choir for several years.

Jane has two daughters, Jane and Celia, as well as four grandchildren and a great grandson.

Speaking about her parents Jane said: “Mum and dad shared a great passion for music. They were both music teachers and a very valuable commodity in those days.

“Dad was a singer and conductor. This lead dad to form school choirs, with mum as his accompanist, and eventually The Bristol Youth Choir who won a trophy in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and later on The Bristol Pheonix choir.

“Mum was invaluable as an accompanist as she had the great skill of being able to follow and flow with the person or group of people she was accompanying.

“Indeed dad commented that she wasn’t the best pianist he had ever known but she was the best accompanist.”

“Mum and dad spent a happy 55 years living in their lovely home in Crantock Drive, Almondsbury.

“Throughout those years her passion for music and teaching music continued and she formed school choirs which performed excellent concerts on a regular basis.”

“Some years after dad died mum felt she couldn’t live in that big house in Almondsbury on her own any more. Her final years were spent in Katherine House residential home.

“This was a difficult adjustment for mum, but she worked hard to embrace her new life and made friends there.

“She loved to play the piano there much to the delight of residents and those who worked there.

“Mum always spoke very highly of the care she received and the kindness of the staff.

“My sister and I would also like to express our gratitude for the magnificent care she received, and the empathy and compassion of the staff particularly in her final days.

“Mum was a remarkable person, always positive, always strong, as well as warm, generous and compassionate. This made her a wonderful mum, grandmother and great grandmother who was much loved by all who knew her.

Jean’s funeral will be held at Canford Crematorium on Monday, February 3 at 3.45pm.

The family have asked for no flowers.
