A THORNBURY doctor who has helped shape local health services is retiring after 30 years in the town.

Dr Nicholas McCulloch joined St Mary Street Surgery in 1990 and has been a senior partner there since 2013.

His final day at the surgery was January 12.

Dr McCulloch said: “It has been a privilege to work in Thornbury for 30 years. The time has flown and much has changed.

"When I arrived we had only just started using the most basic computer and mobile phones hadn’t been invented: being on call all night or all weekend was the norm and calls were taken by one’s spouse and you had to find a phone box in order reply to a pager.

"Now we are glued to our computer screens all day, for ever longer hours ,and manage much more complex levels of care.

"I feel proud, however, that despite the many current pressures we have made sure the fundamentals haven’t changed at our practice, and I believe we’ve managed to preserve a family orientated service where getting to know your GP or nurse over many years and generations still counts.

"Over time many of my patients have become good friends and I shall miss them, but at least I am confident that they remain in the good hands of the rest of the team.

"I’ll catch up with everyone around town or in the pub!”

Dr Mark Harrison issued the following statement on behalf of all staff at the surgery: “All the staff would like to thank Dr Nick McCulloch warmly for his long years of service to the practice and to our patients in the Thornbury community.

"He has also helped shape health services in the locality by working with organisational bodies such as PCGs and CCGs, and he has helped to support Thornbury Hospital during its operational years.

"He has set excellent educational, clinical and management standards in the practice which we shall aim to continue and build on as the NHS evolves further, and we have much enjoyed working with him.

"He will be much missed by patients and staff alike, and we all wish him a very happy and fulfilling retirement.”
