A Yate takeaway that recently received a 1 star food hygiene rating has been awarded the top grade after a second inspection in two months.

Spice 37, on Wellington Road in Yate, was given a 1 rating by South Gloucestershire Council officers on December 18.

They received two 'Improvement Necessary' scores and one 'Major Improvement Necessary'.

Now though, just one month on officers have re-inspected the takeaway and given it the top rating of 5.

There had been some concern from residents that the original rating was wrong, however the council moved to clarify these rumours.

A South Gloucestershire spokesperson said: "There were no incorrect ratings handed out. We first visited on 18/12/19 and following inspection awarded a rating of 1. We then revisited on 29/01/20 and found a number of improvements and awarded a rating of 5.

"It’s not usual to re-visit so soon but we agreed to return following correspondence with the owner of the business.

"It was a full inspection, unannounced and by a different officer than the original inspection.

"This officer gave a ‘new’ food hygiene rating based on the level of compliance that was found at the time of the re-visit.

"The owner was made aware that the rating could go up, down or stay the same depending on findings on the day and past history."
