TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular former Nailsworth groundsman and actor who sadly passed away last month.

Norman Mansell was the caretaker and groundsman for Nailsworth Town Council for almost 20 years, and he was also a member of the Nailsworth Dramatic Society.

Nailsworth town crier Tony Evans knew Norman well from his time with the council.

He said: "He was a resolute and conscientious worker, and he was a great guy who was always smiling and laughing."

Tony said a flag with the Nailsworth badge was raised for three days to pay tribute to Norman.

Nailsworth town clerk, Katherine Kearns, also paid tribute to Norman, saying he did a brilliant job serving the town.

"When he left his role as caretaker he came back to show the new caretaker the ropes.

"He was a lovely guy and he was very funny."

Norman starred as Basil Fawlty in a memorable performance with the Nailsworth Dramatic Society and tributes have also been pouring in on Facebook.

Paddy Coyle said: "Over the years I had the pleasure to meet Norman and his family many times, and to watch many shows he has been in with the Nailsworth Dramatic Society.

"We all remember the huge sell out Fawlty Towers, but he was also acclaimed in many other roles. I will truly miss him."

Lynn Hanks said: "I’m so very sad to read this. He was one of a kind, a true gentleman, he always had time to have a natter and make me laugh, condolences to his family. RIP"

Ann Ward said: "Very sorry to hear this news. Always did a great job around the town. RIP."
