KIND-hearted residents have raised more than £1,200 to pay for a dog's vet bills after he was abandoned with a broken leg outside a vets in Berkeley.

The Saluki lurcher was found wrapped in an old curtain outside Armstrong Mobile Vets in Breadstone, Berkeley.

He lay in the cold for ten hours until waste collectors found him and raised the alarm.

A white van was captured on CCTV when the animal, – registered as Duke, was dumped but so far no evidence has emerged about those responsible.

Now Stroud District Council’s animal welfare officers, who have re-named the dog Valentine, have found him a new home.

The team provided an update on his progress today and thanked all those who donated towards his veterinary care.

"Firstly, just to let you all know that Valentine went home with his fosterer on Saturday as planned.

"He has settled in very well and is reported as being ‘such a sweet boy’.

"He is seeing Armstrong Mobile Vets today for a bandage change.

"Now for a huge thank you to you, our wonderful, caring followers who have donated money towards Valentine’s op and ongoing care.

"We are absolutely speechless at the kindness and generosity shown by complete strangers, you really are true animal heroes.

"As of 1.30pm today a total of £1,280 has been received in donations either directly to Vale Vets Dursley or to the Go Fund Me page set up by Alice Breaks (bit.ly/2V0W3PI).

"The support this beautiful boy has received from the wonderful veterinary teams involved in his care, the RSPCA and his now thousands of followers is just incredible."

Investigations are continuing and so anyone who knows anything about Valentine, how he broke his leg or who dumped him should call SDC Animal Welfare Service on 01453 754478 or email environmental.health@stroud.gov.uk
