Pupils from a primary school outside Builth Wells spent their half term dressed in their school uniforms collecting money in buckets for their flood-hit school; raising more than £2,500.

At the beginning of half term, Llanelwedd Church in Wales Primary School fell victim to flooding caused by Storm Dennis. An office, canteen and classroom were left badly damaged.

As soon as Jayne Griffiths, the Community Champion for Tesco in Llandrindod Wells, heard the news, she wanted to find ways to help. She donated brooms and cleaning products to the school to help with the clean-up operation; which allowed the school to re-open as normal on Monday.

Jayne also decided to start a bucket collection at the supermarket.

She said: “I gave myself a target of £500 over five days, I thought I’d be quite chuffed with that.

“I couldn’t believe it. We raised £560 on the first day. People were so supportive.”

Jayne said that after she posted on Facebook saying she’d be at the front of the store with buckets, parents starting arriving with their children to help.

“Some of the pupils would stay with me for two of three hours with their school uniforms on, it was so lovely,” she said.

In total, Jayne and her young volunteers raised £2,525 for the school, adding to the £5,250 already fundraised online.
