The Stroud MP's weekly column.

WE are known for being obsessed with talking about the weather, but it has certainly given us good cause recently.

I have been asked why Gloucestershire is not mentioned on the national news and whether we are receiving enough support. At the time of writing, there are no severe flood warnings for the county and with thankfully fewer homes affected here than in some areas, the media are concentrating on the worst hit. This does not mean that there is not extensive work going on each day though. A Civil Protection Duty Officer, Highways officer and the County Council’s communication teams are all working 24/7 to monitor and respond to issues, as are the Environment Agency. The brilliant SARA and our emergency services are always responsive too. All affected areas will work with the County Council to decide whether to trigger emergency funding.

The key thing is that improvements made here after the awful floods in 2007 appear to be making a difference. The defences, maintenance works on drainage and permanent pumps that increased capacity are working. A quick look at our farmers’ waterlogged fields show that they are having an incredibly tough time and any flooded home or business is devastating. I believe there must be constant focus on flood prevention funding.

Employment has continued to grow and is now at a record high. In Stroud, the Valleys and Vale, there has been a 37% reduction in unemployment since 2010. Average weekly earnings for employees increased by over 3% compared with a year earlier. These improvements will not be felt by everybody, but they can be celebrated as important for the economy.

Finally, well done to the Fiver Fest teams and shops for joining in the campaign. Getting us to spend a little bit each week in our independent shops is worthwhile.
