The education secretary has announced that students whose exams have been cancelled will still be given grades so they can attend college or university.

Gavin Williamson told Sky News that pupils will be absent for school for quite some time to stop the spread of Covid-19.

He explained plans to cancel exams for around 5 million pupils but to still grade them.

Final grades will be based on teacher predictions, mock results and coursework from the last year.

Mr Williamson didn't reveal exactly how the results will be calculated but said the Government's plan will be revealed tomorrow.

All schools in the UK will close after tomorrow, but they will remain open to children of key workers and the most vulnerable.

The Government has also promised to give more details on how the school closures will impact students and parents, with the Cabinet Office expected to release a full list of key workers later.
