THE future of the current season seems set to become clearer on Tuesday with leagues set to be consulted early next week.

The Southern League today announced play would remain suspended until April 3 due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

A release from the Football Association and leagues at steps five and six of the National League System (NLS) revealed a conference call would take place on Tuesday (March 24).

The Southern League, which operates divisions at steps three and four, has today confirmed that it will participate in a similar briefing on Monday (March 23).

The league's statement read: "It has been agreed that the league is officially suspended until April 3, 2020.

"However, it should be noted that an Alliance Leagues Committee meeting by conference call will be taking place during the evening of Monday, March 23 regarding the aforementioned and the season going forward.

"A further statement will be issued on Tuesday, March 24.

"The league is aware of the issues faced by clubs and is engaging with the FA on these matters. It is anticipated that the league will be able to provide further information and guidance during next week."

On Thursday, the Midland Football League tweeted: "Following today’s announcement by the Football Association to suspend all professional football until April 30 at the earliest, the FA has called a web seminar with all Step five and six leagues to discuss the situation next Tuesday.

"The FA is continuing to work closely with the leagues in the National League System and is considering a number of options in relation to the conclusion of the 2019-20 season that fall in line with the advice being given by Government in respect of Covid-19."
