CHILDREN in Wotton under Edge are finding ways to spread some cheer as they face isolation during the coronavirus outbreak.

Scarecrows are popping up all over town as part of the Wotton Scarecrow Wanderland.

Originally members of the Blue Coat Primary School PTA were planning a scarecrow trail as a way of promoting their May fair.

“Of course the fair had to be cancelled,” said Ros Lang, chair of the PTA.

“But we thought the scarecrows could continue to celebrate the glorious return of the sun and give us all something to feel joyful about.”

The PTA joined forces with Wotton Window Wanderland and the Wotton Scarecrow Wanderland was created.

“We are encouraging people to create a scarecrow at home and display it proudly,” said Ros.

“Now more than ever we need to draw on the incredible community spirit of Wotton and the surrounding areas, to bring some cheer and happiness.

“It is wonderful to see the community coming together in solidarity and creating something fun and lighthearted in these strange times.

“Of course, we now encourage extreme caution, but hope the scarecrows can provide some light relief when people are getting their daily exercise.”

The PTA have made wood, straw and wire available from the Royal Oak car park so everyone can join in.

“We thought the car park was the best location as the pub is closed, it’s a big open space and central in town,” said Ros.

“So people can avoid close contact, collect in their car or during their daily exercise.”
