DURSLEY joined the nation as it paused for two-minute silence to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and remember those who fought and lost their lives in the Second World War.

Here Kate Reynolds, of Dursley and Cam Royal British Legion, is pictured observing the two-minute silence at 11am, beside the town's memorial gates.

Kate is flanked by Jane Jennings, Dursley and Cam Royal British Legion secretary, who laid a wreath at the gates, and Dursley's deputy mayor Mandy Woodward.

Kate lowered the standard as bugler Ian Smith played the Last Post and then the  council let off a firework to mark the start of the two minute silence. Another firework was set off to signal the end.

The event wasn't promoted so as not to encourage a gathering, but those already in the town stopped to pay their respects.

Kate Reynolds, who is also the Royal British Legion’s deputy county standard bearer for Gloucestershire, took part in a virtual VE Day parade today too.

The online commemoration was organised by RBL member Steven Carr, who asked standard bearers across the world to film themselves lowering their flags, after planned events were cancelled because of the pandemic.

The footage has been edited together, with added shots of a blessing from a vicar and a performance of We’ll Meet Again.
