The Salutation Inn has been declared the best cider pub in Gloucestershire by the Campaign for Real Ale.

Judging for the competition was completed just before the Coronavirus lockdown began.

Pubs were judged on the quality of their cider offering as well as a number of other factors such as a service, atmosphere and decor and value for money.

The Salutation, based in Ham near Berkeley, stocks up to nine real draught ciders from world-class artisan cider makers such as Tom Oliver, Ross Cider and Wild Cider Co as well as a range of bottled ciders and perries.

Landlord Peter Tiley said: "We're utterly thrilled to have won the CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year.

"Whilst we've won national pub of the year awards in the past, we've never won Cider Pub of the Year at the county level.

"We're very passionate about cidermakers who make authentic, quality cider using nothing but fermented apple juice.

"We're very proud to stock more interesting and challenging, full-juice ciders which can rival wine for their refinement and complexity as well as helping to protect local orchards and the ecosystems which they sustain."

Each year the pub also teams up with Gloucestershire cidermaker Wild Cider Co to make its own community cider where it donates £1 from each pint sold towards replanting local orchards.

The Berkeley pub also regularly hosts cider festivals and tasting events showcasing the very best in modern ciders made with traditional methods.

Since it's temporary closure at the end of March the pub has set up an online shop and home delivery service which it is calling 'The Sally At Home'.

The service offers bag-in-box real ale from it's own Tiley's brewery, a large range of draft and bottles ciders, ready meals prepared by it's chef Brian James, artisan cheeses and a selection of basic groceries.

Deliveries are also free to anyone within the GL11, GL12, GL13 postcodes as well as Slimbridge, Thornbury and Alveston.
