A COUPLE from Oaksey celebrated their landmark diamond wedding anniversary last Thursday.

John and Irene Thompson’s daughter Janice was hoping the couple would be able to celebrate their 60th year of marriage by having a family celebration.

And although the current lockdown halted their plans she says her parents were still able to enjoy their day together on May 7.

Janice added that the family are still planning to mark the occasion as a family when the crisis comes to an end.

John, 87, and Irene, 81, married in 1960 and have lived in Oaksey for more than 50 years.

Both are currently enjoying their retirement after lengthy careers.

John worked as a lorry driver and was also in the Merchant navy, while Irene also worked in a factory.

Janice said her parents were really looking forward to getting their card from the Queen for reaching their 60th year as a married couple and are a little disappointed the lockdown meant that hasn’t been possible so far.

Jennie said: “We think the reason they have had a long and happy marriage is because they have always been loving and kind to each other.

“But my dad also used to joke with my mum saying ‘ you can’t go anywhere because you don’t have a suitcase’.

“We wish we could have spoilt you both on your special day. Love from your family and friends.”
