A SOUTH Gloucestershire councillor who stood against Luke Hall in December’s general election has written a letter to the MP asking him to call for Dominic Cummings’ resignation.

Claire Young, leader of the South Gloucestershire Liberal Democrats group, asked Luke Hall to ‘put the interests of your constituents first, end the distractions and join the growing number of Conservative MPs who are calling for Dominic Cummings to go’.

Around 44 Conservative MPs have called for Boris Johnson’s chief advisor to resign over allegations he broke lockdown regulations by driving from London to Durham, with more than 60 having publicly criticised him.

Among them is Douglas Ross who resigned as a Scotland office minister.

Durham Police have today said the aide's trip to Barnard Castle 'might have been a minor breach' of lockdown rules but they will not be issuing a fine.

Luke Hall is yet to give his opinion on the matter.

Cllr Young’s letter states: “People right across Thornbury and Yate have made incredible sacrifices to stop the coronavirus.

“People have contacted me with deeply distressing stories of being unable to be with dying loved ones, of elderly parents missing their own child’s funeral, of not being able to offer the hugs and support they would like to family members in times of crisis - all due to the lockdown restrictions.

“So many sacrifices have been made by so many people. I hope you will therefore empathise with how angry people are about reports that Dominic Cummings has wilfully disregarded the lockdown rules. It cannot be one rule for senior government officials and one rule for everyone else.

“The public have accepted unprecedented restrictions on our liberty to help this country fight the virus. Now is not the time for the Prime Minister to undermine the Government’s public health message to save his adviser."

A spokeswoman for Luke Hall said: “Luke has received no correspondence either by post or email, or been contacted by the former Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Claire Young.”

Cllr Young insists a copy of the letter was emailed to Luke Hall on Monday afternoon and says she received no indication it had not gone through.

The Gazette has contacted Luke Hall for further comment.
